Peer positioning (Kultti & Odenbring, 2015)
Kultti, A. & Odenbring, Y. (2015). Collective and individual dimensions in peer positioning in early childhood education, Early Child Development and Care, 185:6, 868-882
In this paper, Anne Kultti and Ylva Odenbring show how children use repetition of others’ talk and silences to physically include or exclude other children from the group. This work builds on Corsaro’s detailing of children’s peer cultures and shows how children subvert established rules (ie not tsalking about ‘poop’) and position themselves to construct local group membership.
